Semester GPA calculator

Work out one term on its own. Add each course, its credit hours and the grade you earned or expect.

The default at most US colleges. A and A+ are both worth 4.0.

Semester GPA versus cumulative GPA

Your semester GPA covers a single term. Your cumulative GPA covers everything. Schools use the term figure for the dean’s list, for probation decisions and for scholarship renewals that are checked each term, so it carries real weight even though the cumulative number is the one that follows you.

Once you have this term’s number, the cumulative GPA calculator will show you what it does to your overall average.

Using it to plan rather than to look back

The calculator is more useful before grades post than after. Enter the grades you realistically expect and you can see immediately whether the term clears the threshold you care about, while there is still time to change the outcome.

Try the pessimistic version too. If dropping one grade from a B+ to a B- costs you the dean’s list, that tells you exactly which course deserves the next free evening. If a course might turn into a withdrawal instead, read what a W does to your GPA and to financial aid.

Mid-term and finals weighting

A GPA calculator works on final letter grades, not on percentages inside a course. If you are trying to work out what you need on a final exam, that is a separate calculation using your syllabus weighting. Once you know the letter grade each course will land on, bring those here.

A worked example

Microeconomics3A4.012.0
Statistics4B+3.313.2
Spanish II3B3.09.0
Chemistry lab1A-3.73.7

37.9 quality points divided by 11 credits gives a 3.45 GPA.

Common questions

How do I calculate my semester GPA?
Convert each grade to points, multiply by that course’s credit hours, add the results, then divide by the total credit hours for the term. Only the courses from that one semester go into the calculation.
What is a good semester GPA?
Anything at or above 3.00 keeps you in good standing at essentially every school, and a 3.50 or better usually earns a place on the dean’s list. Below 2.00 for a term commonly triggers academic probation, even if your cumulative GPA is still healthy.
How do I get on the dean’s list?
Most schools require a term GPA between 3.50 and 3.70 while carrying a minimum full-time load, often 12 credit hours. Part-time terms and semesters with an incomplete grade are usually excluded. The exact threshold is set by each college, so check your catalog.
Does a summer term count as a semester?
It has its own term GPA and it folds into your cumulative GPA like any other term, but it rarely counts toward dean’s list because the credit load is below the full-time minimum. Summer is often the cheapest way to add credits and lift a cumulative average.
Why is my semester GPA higher than my cumulative GPA?
Because they measure different spans. A strong term raises your cumulative GPA, but only in proportion to how many credits that term represents out of your whole transcript. Early on the two numbers track closely; later they can diverge a long way.
